Cat B15Q
Cat B15Q Smartphone Review-Positive (Cat B15Q AT&T offers great sound quality). Negative (The phone is limited to 3G connectivity and the screen is difficult to see the off-axis or outdoors). Important (Cat B15Q is a phone that is really rough, but ancient and display connectivity options that let keep from light if outdoors).
B15Q different paint. Phones sold in places like Home Depot and was probably built to Caterpillar clients, professional gray which will incorporate the device into their jumpsuits before wearing a helmet to do something daring or dangerous or both of these. It was small, only with 4-inch screen. It is also just over half an inch thick, not really slim, but it is much more pocketable than the average brick ruggedized. And weighs just under 6 ounces, Caterpillar has released several mobile phones in Europe, including the B100 Cat, and Cat S50.
Rubber bumpers at the top and bottom of the phone help soften the edges so that it feels comfortable in the hand and adds a bit of extra drop protection device at an angle. And then there is the CAT logo up, which evokes thoughts big yellow machine tore through a giant mound of dirt.
Cat B15Q USA is IP67 certified, which means it is dustproof and waterproof up to 30 minutes at a depth of one meter (slightly more than 3 meters). Cat said the phone, while not indestructible, we have tested and able to withstand the power of falling from a height of up to 6 meters on hard surfaces such as concrete. It was fine and while there are some scratches on the aluminum plate, Gorilla Glass 2 screen has raised fine. Cat also touts "wet-finger tracking," which means your phone can still use the screen when your hands are wet, he worked in the rain and in the less realistic test involving a garden hose, you just need to make sure the water is not too much build up on the screen. We can not imagine too many estimates when soaked.
A Micro-USB port on the left, hidden behind a flap. The power button sits on the top, next to the headphone jack is also hidden behind a flap. when you remove the USB cable or a pair of headphones from the port needed them, a small dialog window appears, reminding you to seal the phone back. There is no such warnings when removing the backplate phone even though we think it would be a far greater risk.
The right side of the phone hosts the volume controls and a dedicated camera button in the signature yellow Caterpillar. We like the inclusion of a dedicated camera key, which may be very useful in a busy workplace or while you're in the mountains or wherever.
Actually there is a bigger problem, in a disappointing display. Low resolution with 800x480-pixel, which could be forgiven if you do not plan to show off photos or watch HD video. But when thinking of Caterpillar, we thought great outdoor construction sites and glossy appearance becomes quite difficult to see in direct sunlight. Hold the phone upright and contrast degradation to the point where it's really not possible to make what is on the screen.
The back of the phone hosts a 5-megapixel camera and a large CAT logo. It looks and feels good, par for the course with the whole package. A lock switch holding the backplate in place; slide to unlock, pry off the back, and you will find a 2,000mAh battery, microSD card slot and dual SIM card slots. This backplate is quite easy to lock back into place and locked with certainty.
Software and Features
The B15Q Verizon running Android 4.4.2 KitKat. We were told at this time there are no plans to upgrade the device to Android 5.0 Lollipop. There's an app for FM Radio, File Manager, an application checklist called ToDo and video editing applications. We are not entirely sure why the latter is present, but if you work or camp needs to cooperate with an impromptu performance of the Harlem Shake, you can make it happen. We found less bloatware is the best thing.
Achievement
1.3GHz quad-core CPU phone is not exactly a powerhouse, but it never gets in the way when the testing phase. We flipped through menus and websites easily with no sign of lag or stuttering. We do not expect a lot of walking on gaming performance, and were not disappointed, we usually stick to casual games, and things like Angry Birds: Transformers offers smooth, responsive gameplay.
Limited storage prove far more annoying again, once the application and the like have been accounted for, you go with just under 2GB capacity to store data, which means you will need to take a microSD card if you want to install a lot of applications, or take a lot of photos.
Dual-SIM phone unlocked, but use a full size SIM card, which is pretty rare these days. We tested the T-Mobile network in San Francisco and the quality is great, we could hear everyone talking with fine when called, though sometimes have to press the earpiece is slightly closer to the ear. While this is a quad-band phone is limited to 3G connectivity, which is unfortunate.
Battery life is 2,000mAh, rated up to 16 hours of time to talk. Used itself consists of many web browsing and video streaming, photographing, and "accidentally" dropped the phone in the whole place, and generally look a day and a half of use before you put the charger back.
Camera
There is a 5-megapixel camera on the back, although the quality of most of the hit or miss. In an ideal situation, a static subject in a bright, sunny day, we had a perfectly respectable image. Colors are muted and intricate little details such as cracks in walls are softened, but if it is not very useful.
