XYZPrinting Da Vinci Jr. 3D Printer 2015

It has a platform that is small despite the large physical size, can not be used to make large object. Most 3D printers ranging from $ 1,000 and $ 5,000. And even then, they are not always easy to use and do not offer the feature as good as those of Da Vinci Jr. In comparison, Da Vinci Jr. is essential for anyone who wants to dabble in the world of 3D printing. And talk about a good deal, if you also want to do 3D scanning or to print larger objects, Da Vinci 1.0 AiO is very good.

No Calibration Required, Proprietary Filament

The Da Vinci Jr. is basically a scaled version of its predecessor, the all-in-one Da Vinci 1.0 AiO. The new printer is smaller and does away with the scan options but now features the ability to print directly from the SD card. The rest is very similar, from the setup process for the software, for print speed and quality. Da Vinci Jr. and running in less than 10 minutes, including the time it takes to unbox it. The whole process was easy, but if you have never dealt with a 3D printer before and need help, there is a very good illustration, step by step guide that is included. Out of the box, the 3D printer is assembled and almost ready for use. All you need to do is remove the packing materials, install filament spool is included, and the tide.

In 3D printing, calibration (alignment or leveling) is a complicated process where you have to make sure the entire surface of the print platform on a consistent and perfect distance from the print head's nozzles. If you do not do it correctly, the printer can not produce an object reflecting the 3D model. Many printers require manual calibration before they can make their first print. Calibration is by far the largest hurdle you need to overcome when first entering the world of 3D printing. The Da Vinci Jr. using proprietary filament, which is the raw material for 3D printing, such as ink cartridges in inkjet printers. They come in various colors and essentially melts easily, quickly congealing plastic string that is fed through the print head nozzles when printing. With most of the 3D printer, the filament comes in rolls open.

In the case of Da Vinci Jr., the spool itself has a small chip, and according XYZprinting, connecting to a printer via near field communication (NFC) to provide information on the type of printer of filament is used, the color and how many are left. The printer will not work with other rolls but are made for this model. White is the only color available. But the company said the other colors will be available soon. Each spool contains about 1.3 pounds (600 grams) of the filament and cost somewhere between $ 25 and $ 30 respectively. Note that the filaments propriatary is a new trend in 3D printing. It seems more and more vendors are taking this route. 3D Systems, for example, with Cube 3, and Cel with Robox. In the future, I suspect that most vendors will make the filaments themselves for their printers.

Easy to use software, support card slot

At the front, the Da Vinci Jr. 3D has a 2.6-inch, four-line LCD screen resolution is accompanied by six navigation keys to control the machine. You can use this buttons to adjust the printer, including loading and unloading filament, view printer status, and even start a print job without needing a computer. The last option is available because the printer has a SD card slot next screen. Card 4GB capacity available in the printer, which contains the configuration guide in PDF format as well as a 3D model of the test, but you can use the SD card with the printer, as long as it is formatted in FAT 32.

Once the 3D model file has been loaded on the card, the printer can print directly from it. On the right side, the printer has a standard USB port for connecting to a computer using a standard USB 2.0 cable included. You can choose to print both from the mold or the SD card from the computer. For the latter, you need to install the software XYZWare (Windows and Mac). This software is one of the most user-friendly I've seen in a 3D printer. Interface consists of a large and clear enough buttons that allow you to import and manipulate 3D objects file.

You can perform all standard adjustments, including changing the size of the 3D object (scale), print quality setting between normal, either (default) or very good; adjust the filling level (hollow or solid), and so on. You can also add some of the 3D model file to the print job as long as they do not exceed the maximum print volume. Using the software, you can print directly to a printer or save the model to the SD card.

Achievement

The Da Vinci Jr. is fused filament fabrication (FFF) printer. This means that during a print job, the print head of the printer pulls the strings of filaments, melted plastic, and extrudes it through a nozzle to the bottom platform. This platform is gradually lowered as the printed object gets higher, and the print head moves around depending on the width of objects and shapes.

As the pile of extruded plastic on top, layer by layer, it thickens very quickly and after a while it will slowly form the object. This process is also often called fused deposition modeling (FDM); The 3D printing technology is currently used in most consumer-grade 3D printers. As a single extruder, XYZPrinting Da Vinci Jr. 3D Printer can work with only one source of the filament at a time. This means, you can only print one color with a printer object. But you can always paint the object is finished in any color you like afterwards. The printer shows the same print speed as most of other 3D printers. depending on the size of the object, and the level of quality settings, print jobs can take half an hour for more than 10 hours.
